A Change in Direction free essay sample

â€Å"You’re cut.† These words hit me as if I were frozen in her path. Was she serious? What am I supposed to do now? It took time to sink in. I was confused. I’ve been on varsity for two years, and now I’m cut? I realized something other than volleyball needed to take control. Until this point, volleyball was my life. I know that sounds crazy, but it actually was. It took up every ounce of my free time. In the fall, it was volleyball daily until the end of late October. And in November, it was time for club. I practiced during the week and traveled nationally for weekend tournaments. I had been doing that since I was eleven, so by sixteen, it was normal. But now I was cut. And I didn’t know what to do. I repeatedly asked my parents, â€Å"Am I still supposed to play club?† The reply was always the same: â€Å"It’s up to you. We will write a custom essay sample on A Change in Direction or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page † I knew it was up to me, but I didn’t know what the best direction was. I decided to play club volleyball that November. But as the season went on, I realized it wasn’t as enjoyable as it used to be. The practices seemed longer, the tournaments seemed more frequent, and my free time seemed completely gone. After club season ended, I realized I wanted to do more with my life. I got a job that made me realize I enjoy working with kids. I joined Earth Club—I picked up garbage on the highway and planted trees in my community—and I learned how I can make a difference. I joined track and cross country, and gained a personal record in the 300 meter low hurdles and completed my first 4K. I saw there is a world outside of volleyball—a world I wasn’t exposed to—and I found being cut wasn’t as bad as I thought. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has a multitude of opportunities I could partake in. I will find a new job. I will join a club to help the La Crosse community. I will do something different and something other than volleyball. It’s time for me to continue on a new direction in my life, and I believe that UW-Stevens Point is the place to go.

White-collar crime vs. street crime essay

White-collar crime vs. street crime essay White-collar crime vs. street crime essay White-collar crime vs. street crime essayTo start with, both street crime and white-collar crime have the major consequences. Robberies, thefts, and vandalism are considered to be serious crimes committed every day in the streets. Anyone can become the victims of street criminals. Often these crimes are committed under the influence of alcohol or drugs since ‘crime culture consists of a group or groups of individuals who live outside societal norms’ (Lifers, 2004, p. 57). As a result, street crime is one of the most dangerous types of crimes. This is due to the fact that the situation on the streets of big and small settlements creates a psychological climate for the population living here and contributes to the formation of public opinion about the criminal situation in a particular locality, region, country as a favorable or unfavorable impact on the formation of public opinion about the activities of criminal justice and the government as a whole. In this context, it is evident that the study of the regional aspects of street crime often serves as the determinants of specific criminal manifestations. The most typical street crimes are the following:crimes against life and health (murder, bodily injury);crimes against sexual inviolability and sexual freedom (rape);crimes against property (theft, robbery, fraud);crimes against public security and public order (hooliganism, vandalism, illegal possession of weapons;crimes against public health (drug trafficking). In general, it is easier to prepare and to hide the committed crime in the city because the offenders can have more opportunities to use the proceeds of crime and to dissolve into the crowd of people. The development of the concept of ‘street crime’ has not only theoretical, but also practical significance. It is important to define the street boundaries, where the most typical and relatively resistant variants of criminal behavior can be found. Thus, one of the main elements of the scope of a city street is considered to be the predominant anonymity of communication and human behavior. Street criminals are basically young people with anti-social behavior formed on a background of alcohol or drugs, leading a parasitic way of life. Commonly ‘they have their own values, codes, practices, and principles that are oftentimes in direct opposition to the larger society’ (Lifers, 2004, p. 57). As a consequence, typical motives for street crime are to meet the need for purchasing alcoholic beverages or drugs. In addition to the above-mentioned information, it is possible to add that the determination of street crime is characterized by a complex and multi-layered character. In this connection, it is important to address the issues of determination of street crime and pay specific attention to the most important factors, such as the crisis in the economic, cultural, spiritual, legal spheres of today’s society. Consequently, ‘unemployment, rac ism, and discrimination plays in pushing people toward the criminal underclass,’ and thus, leading a parasitic way of life (Lifers, 2004, p. 57-58). As a result, these processes largely determine those currently existing negative social phenomena, such as alcoholism, drug addiction, vagrancy, etc., which are considered to be the major background in relation to the crime phenomenon.Given the above, we can understand street crime as a system of crime (against the person, against property, public safety, public order and public health), which is characterized by weak social controls, the passivity of citizens in regard to the prevention and suppression of criminal manifestations and anonymity of subjects of such relations.Warning street crime can be very effective and efficient when attracting people to prevent this type of crime. The forms of organization of the population may be different: the voluntary militias, which, incidentally, are recreated in most regions of the countr y, student (youth) operational units, community helpers, wardens and others. Attracting people to policing on the streets, the authorities implement a dual function: on the one hand, they increase the level of social control in the streets, and thereby reduce the potential for committing crimes, and on the other hand, they increase the legal awareness of citizens, the extent of their civil liability, form the right social views, and allow the population to feel their involvement in the work of criminal justice system.White-collar crimeTalking about white-collar crime, it is possible to say that in most instances this type of crime is financially more cost.   It is ‘estimated to cost the United States more than $300 billion annually (Berkeley, 2009, p. 201). However, this does not mean that white-collar crime does not cause harm to the individuals. In fact, it can inflict bodily harm upon people. For example, some corporations can be twice as deadly as a street offender, and thus, white collar crime can be even more dangerous than, for instance, street crime.White-collar crime is a type of crime carried out on the basis of belonging to a criminal number of persons acting as the representatives of governments, businesses, officers and officials. It is also widely known as fictitious economy (which is part of the informal economy), which refers to illegal activities employed in the formal economy agents associated with a hidden redistribution of legal income. This type of crime can include fraud, corruption, industrial espionage, tax evasion, false bankruptcy and others. This type of crime is considered to be the one that may do the most economic damage to our modern society among all other types of crimes. Also, white-collar crime is a violation of laws for the protection of the environment, bribery of officials in order to obtain lucrative contracts, and other forms of corruption. The multiple ways to deceive consumers in the production of goods, trade and services can also be understood as the types of white-collar crime. However, white-collar crime only in very rare cases becomes the object of criminal repression. In addition to intentional crimes committed in order to obtain property benefits, ‘white-collar crime’ is characterized by different   offenses related to criminal negligence, incompetence, violation of the technology of production, which can be very destructive to the individuals. The subject of this type of crime must have certain distinct features. The most important feature is one’s professional status, i.e. an official position and the fulfillment of certain administrative functions, as well as a high level of expertise within the field of economic activity. Actually, they are ‘crimes by individuals in prestigious positions’ (Champion, 2011, p. 35). On this basis, we can conclude that the subject of ‘white-collar’ crime is a senior officer or director of a legal entity (a person with some managerial responsibilities). In fact, ‘white-collar criminals have no special personality traits, and argue that these individuals are just ordinary people who view illegal activity as the most reasonable way out of a difficult financial situation’ (Watt, 2012, p. 5). Indeed, those people do not possess special personality patterns or unique characteristics; they are just the ordinary individuals with different prestigious positions and various managerial responsibilities.Hence, the object of this type of crime is the social relations in the sphere of economic activity and the normal functioning of the business. However, the state itself (represented by the authorities) can also serve as the major object of this type of crime. As a result, if the official organs of state power act as the subject of the economic crime, the damage is caused not only to individuals and institutions, but also to the entire system of state bodies in the form of undermin ing their authority. The investigations carried out by the law enforcement authorities usually do not end with the pursuit of practical ends, but on the contrary, perpetrators are brought to administrative responsibility. All the above features make it possible to formulate a clear definition of ‘white-collar’ crime as acquisitive crime being committed by senior officers, directors of legal persons, who possess high social status in the course of one’s occupation and professional activities and aimed at the interests of the state, society, businesses and individuals in the area of economic activity and normal functioning of the business (Berkeley, 2009).Punishment for both types of crimeHence, it is possible to conclude that both street crime and white-collar crime have major consequences. Firstly, white-collar offences are understood ‘as equally serious as street crimes’ (Payne, 2012, p. 53) that have almost the same characteristics. However, their punishments are strongly different in many ways. By its nature, white-collar crime is a lot harder to detect because it takes many hours in order to build a case around it and they usually do not involve serious bodily harms or people’s deaths. In addition, they are ‘†¦difficult to prosecute because the perpetrators have access to sophisticated means to hide their activities and the wrongdoing can be hidden within legitimate economic activity’ (Berkeley, 2009, p. 201). Hence, they are referred to non-violent crimes motivated mainly by financial gain. If we are talking about the priorities, it is necessary to say that the law enforcements agencies are required to focus their particular attention on the violent crimes then, for instance, the property ones. The perfect examples of more violent crimes are street crimes that are understood as more visible. In this case, there are always the victims who have been seriously damaged or wounded. Hence, these crimes are given higher priority to prevent the offenders from committing the same crime again and again. As a result, the need to resolve street crimes and find the perpetrators is of great importance for law enforcement agencies.ConclusionThus, taking the above-mentioned information into consideration, it is possible to draw a conclusion that crime itself that accompanies us everywhere in our everyday lives is one of the main issues, which haunt today’s society. In this case, white-collar crime and street crime are both very serious offences against the individuals and the community as a whole. On a daily basis, people can hear of various rapes, robberies and murders. These particular crimes are called street ones. However, when we are talking about white-collar crime, it is possible to mention about cybercrime, fraud, corruption, false bankruptcy, industrial espionage, tax evasion, and others.   As a result, both crimes have their own victims and the effects of th ese crimes can be very destructive to the community. Both street crime and white-collar crime have major consequences. They both can inflict bodily harm upon people causing harm to the individuals. However, their punishments are strongly different in many ways. In fact, white-collar crime only in very rare cases becomes the object of criminal repression. In return, street crimes are given higher priority to prevent the criminals from committing the same crime again and again. As a result, the need to resolve these particular crimes and find the perpetrators is of great importance for law enforcement agencies.

The Similarities and Differences between Ijarah and Leasing Essay

The Similarities and Differences between Ijarah and Leasing - Essay Example Since the banking crisis around the world, many countries have shifted to an alternate banking system such as the Islamic banking system in which there is a mechanism of sharing profit and loss and using fixed service charges instead of interest charges which eases the pressure on the economy. Some prohibitions and certain guidelines have been drawn by the Shariah law, which makes a clear comparison between the conventional finance system and Islamic finance system. The unlawful charging of the interest, Riba, is the foremost concept that is prohibited by the Islamic Shariah, while it also prohibits gharar, an uncertainty in activities and has made gambling, Maisir, forbidden which makes it to differ from the conventional finance system in which interest is considered to be a common ground. In an Islamic term, Ijarah is an agreement to offer something for a lease, rent, or wage. According to a different meaning in Islamic fiqh, Ijarah is also referred to as a payment offered to a person for the services that were delivered by the same person. However, if the term Ijarah is considered in the setting of Islamic banking, it is referred to as the process of transference of a particular property from one person to another in exchange of a lawful return or rent from the owner. The procedure involves the lawful transference of the asset from the owner to the lessee and ends with the purchase of the leasing object. Ijarah in the context of Islamic banking is known as Ijarah Thumma Al-Bai or Ijarah Muntahia Bittamleek, which is a type of leased contract that can only be ended with the purchase of the leased asset. The paper discusses the two concepts relating to the finance system, the convention form of financing system and the Islamic way of financing. Moreover, the paper will discuss the leased contracts based on Ijarah, which is consistently being used by the Islamic institutions. Furthermore, the study will differentiate between the concept of Ijarah leasing and financial and operating leases. The study will also highlight the accounting systems which have been recommended by the Accounting and Audition Organization for the Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) and the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Lastly, the paper will give recommendations to conciliate between these approaches. Lease is defined as a rental agreement between the two parties in which the owner of the asset gives rights to the lessee to use the asset, and it would be the responsibility of the lessee to compensate timely and contractual payments to the lessor (Brealey et al., 2006(. There are many benefits in leasing over obtaining external borrowing or purchasing assets by making full payment, and it can benefit in terms of the saving of the taxes, costs associ ated with the use of assets, and mitigation of risks (Ross, Westerfield and Jaffe, 2005). Leasing can create a positive impact as it reduces the cost of financial distress and minimizes the chances of bankruptcy. Even if the lessee occurs to be a defaulter, the lessee would be given a higher priority than a creditor who just borrows money. Leasing generally helps in the sharing of inflation risk, business risk, and residual value risk. The residual value risk is considered to be the risk associated with the market value of the asset at the maturity date which can be transferred from the lessee to the lessor who has the authority to adjust the lease payments to cover the risk. If the lessor can earn an advantage from the secondary market, the lease payments

The life of Thomas Alva Edison a Historical Look Research Paper

The life of Thomas Alva Edison a Historical Look - Research Paper Example This happened after he was credit with the creation of the first research laboratory for industrial use in Menlo Park (Melosi, 2008). Some of his contribution included the phonograph, electric bulb, telegraph, kinetograph and alkaline storage batteries (Stross, 2007). His work has been remembered since his death in the year 1931. Early life Thomas was born on February 11 the year 1847 in Milan, Ohio. He was the youngest child in his family after his mother had lost two children in their early life. After being one of the first elites in the United States, he has had tremendous contribution to both technical and theoretical works. His life career was a business and inventor (Stout, 2008). He used his inventions to make money since at the time most of the Elites in the United States had started accumulating wealth. Due to their education, they had been respect in the society and most took this advantage to come up with new ideas of wealth creation. His hometown was a very busy one and contributed to his early works as a youth. However, after the railway bypassed Milan, it led to the fading of trade in the area. Trade was the main social activity and source of income. After trade had faded, Thomas and his family moved to Port Huron where they started a new life with hopes of better sources of income. In this new location, Thomas gained most of his early education from his mother who by then was a schoolteacher. Since it was her son’s life, she took great care of him and provided extensive education program. She was highly motivated by his son’s interest in science and external matters. He wanted to know how life was outside the Huron town. Early Career: a historical look At the age of 12, Thomas had some much interest in locomotives and especially due to reason that the railway had passed through his previous hometown. To learn more about the systems, he secured a job with a newspaper company to sell newspapers, novels, and magazines. This also motiv ated him in his reading during his free time. He visited the library several times to read books on science. After a short time selling newspapers, he started publishing his own newspaper known as the Weekly Herald. Due to his focus on railways, the paper featured railroad matters and hence attracted a large number of subscriptions from Grand Trunk. Profits from his newspaper publishing company were used to start a laboratory, which was to be used in science experiments. Unfortunately, he started losing his hearing caused by ear infections while he was a child. On scrutiny, he claimed that it was an asset since he did not have to hear what people told him as he slept. It also helped him during his reading sessions since there were no distractions for the outside. Profits from his newspaper publishing company were used to start a laboratory, which was to be used in science experiments. At the age of 24, he had already started a laboratory and factory across the Hudson River in Newark , New Jersey. He had carried out a research and noted that the people of Newark needed telegraph machines for their businesses to run well. His telegraph business started picking up after he added installations that made relaying of two messages to different lines at the same time possible. To increase the capital base, he made partnerships with the highest available bidders. His company became of Western Union’

Moving Object Detection Video Images Using Matlab Computer Science Essay

Moving Object Detection Video Images Using Matlab Computer Science Essay Moving object detection is an important research topic of computer vision and video processing areas. Detection of moving objects In video streams is the first relevant step of information extraction in many computer vision applications.. This paper puts forward an improved background subtraction of moving object detection of fixed camera condition. Then combining the adaptive background subtraction with symmetrical differencing obtains the integrity foreground image. Using chromaticity difference to eliminate the shadow of the moving target, effectively distinguishes moving shadow and moving target. The results show that the algorithm could quickly establish the background model and detect integrity moving target rapidly. Moving object detection is an important part of digital image processing techniques and it is the base of the many following sophisticated processing task such as target recognition and tracking, target classification, behavior understanding and analysis .Aside from the intrinsic usefulness of being able to segment video streams into moving and background components, detecting moving objects provides a focus of attention for recognition, classification and activity analysis. The technology has a wide application prospect such as smart monitor, autonomous navigation, human computer interaction, virtual reality and so on. This paper studies the method of obtaining the data of moving object from video images by background extraction. Object detection requires two steps: background extraction and object extraction. Moving object detection needs static background image. Since each frame of video image has moving object then background extraction is necessary. Each frame image subtracting the background image can get the moving object image. This is object extraction. Then the moving object detection can be achieved. This paper firstly introduces two moving object detection algorithms of fixed scenes frame difference method and moving edge method and analyzes their advantages and disadvantages, and then presents a new algorithm based on them, lastly gives the experimental results and analysis Background extraction of moving object Background extraction means that the background, the static scene, is extracted from the video image. Because the camera is fixed, each pixel of the image has a corresponding background value which is basically fixed over a period of time. Well known issues in background extraction include 1)Light changes: background model should adapt to gradual illumination changes. 2)Moving background: background model should include changing background that is not of interest for visual surveillance such as moving trees 3) Cast shadows: the background model should include the shadow cast by the moving objects that apparently behaves itself moving in order to have a more accurate detection of moving object shape. 4)Bootstrapping: the background model should be properly setup even in absence of a complete and static training set at the beginning of the segment 5) Camouflage: moving objects should be detected even if their chromatic features are similar to those of thebackground model. . Calculation of consecutive frames subtraction The method utilizes current two frames or the differences between the current frame and its previous frame to extract a motion region. In this paper, we adopt its improvement methods namely symmetrical differencing, that means image differences of the three current frames. This method can remove effects of unveiling background which is caused by motion, accurately obtain contour of moving targets. In the conventional background subtraction method, a fixed reference background model for the intended surveillance area is constructed in advance. The conventional background subtraction method extracts moving targets based on the difference between the current image and the reference background model. It works well for applications in controlled environments, in which a constant illumination scenario can be achieved artificially. However, for other visual tracking applications such as traffic monitoring and security/surveillance, the illumination conditions change over time so that a fixed reference background model is not realistic and may eventually lead to a detection failure. Consequently, construction and maintenance of a reliable and accurate reference background model is crucial in background subtraction based motion detection approaches. Figure 1 algorithm for background subtraction Typical moving object detection algorithms Frame difference method To detect moving object in the surveillance video captured by immobile camera, the simplest method is the frame difference method for the reason that it has great detection speed, can be implemented on hardware easily and has been used widely. While detecting moving object by frame difference method, in the difference image, the unchanged part is eliminated while the changed part remains. This change is caused by movement or noise, so it calls for a binary process upon the difference image to distinguish the moving objects and noise. Connected component labeling is also needed to acquire the smallest rectangle containing the moving objects. The noise is assumed as Gaussian white noise in calculating the threshold of the binary process. According to the theory of statistics, there is hardly any pixel which has dispersion more than 3 times of standard deviation. Thus the threshold is calculated as following: T â‚ ¬Ã‚ ½Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  u â‚ ¬Ã‚ «Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  3 ¶ While u is the mean of the difference image  ¶ â‚ ¬Ã‚  is the standard deviation of the difference image. The flow chart of the detecting process by frame method is shown in fig 2 Fig 2 Frame Differencing Method Moving edge method Difference image can be regarded as time gradient, while edge image is space gradient. Moving edge can be defined by the logic AND operation of difference image and the edge image . The advantage of frame difference method is its small calculation, and the disadvantage is that it is sensitive to the noise. If the objects do not move but the brightness of the background changes, the results of frame difference methods may be not accurate enough. Since the edge has no relation with the brightness, moving edge method can overcome the disadvantage of frame difference method. The flow chart of the detecting process by moving edge method is shown in fig 3 Fig 3. Moving edge method Improved Moving object detection algorithm based on frame difference and edge detection Moving edge method can effectively suppress the noise caused by light, but it still has some misjudgments to some other noise. This paper proposes an improved algorithm based on frame difference and edge detection. Upon analysis, the method has better noise suppression and higher detection accuracy. 1. Algorithm introduction The flow chart of the detection process by using the method based on frame difference and edge detection presented in this paper Fig 4. Improved Algorithm The steps of new algorithm presented in this paper are as follows. (1) Get edge images Ek-1 and Ek by edge detection with two continuous frames Fk-1 and Fk by using Canny edge detector. (2) Get edge difference image Dk by difference between Ek and Ek-1. (3) Divide edge difference image Dk into some certain small blocks and count the number of non-zero pixels in the block, and recorded it as Sk. (4) If Sk is larger than the threshold, mark the block is a moving area, otherwise it is a static area. Let 1 presents moving area and 0 presents static area, we can get a matrix M. (5) Do connected components labeling to M, and remove the connected components that are too small. (6) Get the smallest rectangles containing the moving objects. The algorithm has improved both the object Segmentation and object locating. .2 Object segmentation Object segmentation is to divide the image into moving area and static area. The algorithm presented in this paper will get the edge images first, then difference them to get the edge difference image. In thefinal image we get, the pixel value of background area equal to 0 and pixel value of the edge of movingobjects equal to 1. Now we will compare the difference between our algorithm and moving edge method (1) In moving edge method, assume two continuous frames are Fk-1 and Fk, background is B, moving objects are Mk-1 and Mk, and independent white noise is Nk-1 and Nk for two frames each. Then we can have So we can get the difference between two frames: Use Canny edge detection with frames Fk. We can get edge image Ek. Then we can get the result: EMk, ENk are edge images caused by Mk and Nk each. Define signal noise ratio is While SEM is the number of edges caused by moving objects, and SEN is the number of edges caused by noise. Then we know the SNR of the moving edge method is (2) In our method, we first get edge images by edge detector: Then by difference we get Since in the practical system, the difference between two edge images is absolute value of the difference value and the edges of two images are not the same when the objects are moving So actually in the edge difference image we can have the sum of the edges of two frames. Because the noise is independent and two frames are dependent with each other, we can have The SNR in our algorithm is It shows that the SNR in our algorithm is less than the moving edge method. Our method will work more efficiently. 3..Detection of moving cast shadows To prevent the moving shadows being misclassified as moving objects or parts of moving objects, this paper represents an explicit method of detection of moving cast shadows on a dominating scene background. These shadows are generated by objects between a light source and the background. Moving cast shadows cause a frame difference between two succeeding images of a monocular video image sequence. For shadow detection these frame differences are detected and classified into regions covered and regions uncovered by a moving shadow. The detection and classification assume plane background and a non negligible size and intensity of light sources. A cast shadow is detected by temporal integration of the covered background regions while subtracting the covered background regions. The shadow detection method is integrated into an algorithm for 2D shape estimation of moving objects. The extended segmentation algorithm compensates first apparent camera motion. then a spatially adaptive relax ation scheme estimates a change detection mask for two consecutive images. An object mask is derived from the change detection mask by elimination of changes due to background uncovered by moving objects and the elimination of changes due to background covered or uncovered by moving cast shadows. Experimental results and analysis In this paper, an improved moving object detection algorithm based on frame difference and edge detection is brought forward The operating environment is Windows XP. Programming environment is Matlab 8.0. Size of the sequence image is 640ÃÆ'-480. Partial stimulation results are as follows. From the results we can see that the improved moving object detection algorithm based on frame difference and edge detection has much greater recognition rate and higher detection speed than several classical algorithms. This algorithm will appear individual false under more complicated background. There is still room for improvement. V. Conclusion This paper presents an improved moving object detection algorithm based on frame difference and edge detection. This method not only retains the small calculation from frame difference method and the impregnability of light from edge detection method, but also improves in noise restraining. Meanwhile, it divides the image to small blocks to do connected component labeling, significantly speeding up the detection. Experimental results show that the algorithm has great recognition rate, high speed, and will be a good candidate for practical systems Acknowledgment I would like to thank my guide Prof.(Dr).A.P.Dhande the constant encouragement assistance he provided me at every stage of the preparation of this paper. I am very grateful to Mr.Mahesh Khadtare for his valuable suggestions and help during this paper implementation. .

The Excellence Of Women In Shakespearean Tragedy Essay -- William Shak

Excellence, from the root excellent, is the achievement of something extremely good in life. These achievements can be of a literary nature, or a cosmic nature, however the excellence that pertains to the coming essay, is that which is found within the female characters of Shakespearean tragedies. Despite the patriarchal ways of life during Shakespeare's age, he constantly conveys the ladies of his plays with nothing short of "excellent ... beauty, wit, and virtue." [Doran 135] Doran's article "The Idea of Excellence In Shakespeare" is a detailed work, which engages itself in the wide scope of Shakespearean sonnets and all his theatrical work concerning excellence. Doran says very frankly that due to Shakespeare?s representation of women, through his plays, it is very clear that he prides himself with excellence in general. Although Doran brings to our attention the importance, and possible disaster, of over emphasizing glorious attributes, the act of which is known as a hyperbole [134], Shakespearean females, even when denied fancy dialect and metaphors, still are able to expose their virtues of loyalty, honestly, love, and patience in most everything they do. Doran begins his detailed account of specific females with none other than Cordelia, but due to further argument I will pass over his analysis of Lear?s daughter and continue with his depiction of Desdemona. Doran introduces Desdemona by stating, ?[her] virtues are ? independence, honesty, loyal ty, and great generosity.? [147] Within a standard reading of Othello these characteristic are by no means shadowed, they are vividly portrayed in most, if not all, of her actions. Her independence is conveyed by her decision to marry Othello without the good grace of her ... ...ults are that of a divine member, a goddess. To conclude Shakespeare presents all his ladies as self-righteous, independent, loving women who deserve to be noticed. Each woman holds her own sense of excellence with regards to her virtues. In particular, Desdemona and Cordelia, especially rise up to the occasion. Both of these women know who they are, how they got to be who they are, what they want, and how to get what they want, nothing, I repeat nothing, explains the excellence of a women better than that. Ezra Pound’s “In a Station of the Metro” Essay

Ezra Pound first published this poem in 1913, at a time when writers of poetry were trying to break from the traditional pentameters associated with their craft. This piece is an excellent example of Imagism, in which poets, instead of describing an image in detail , tried to use a minimal amount of words, and evoke an image by use of a well-written phrase. Pound uses haiku style of poetry in this piece which contains only 14 words- a stark contrast to the 20-30 lines from previous era of Victorianism. Pound once explained that he did not wish the heart of the poem to be in the first or second line- but to be the thought process that connects them. While this is a concept used in Imagism, it is more like the latter form he embraced- Vorticism. This categorization comes from the endeavor of the author to treat the poem as a piece of graphic art. Upon examination of the poem itself, it is interesting to note that no verbs are used in the poem, yet it conveys a sense of movement. His choice of the word â€Å"apparition† automatically makes the reader conjure images of mysticism and spirits, thus he begins his contrasts between the real and the unreal; the beautiful and the ugly; the mundane and the exotic. His contrast of nature versus man-made and the quick transition he makes is very typical of the Japanese haiku style. Interestingly he uses â€Å"petals† instead of flowers, giving it a softer, more feminine quality; thus the dark masculinity of the black bough is doubled. The comparison of these two is simultaneous with what the poet has seen on the railway platform- opposites that not only are extremes but that compliment each other. There is continued debate among scholars as to the true meaning of this poem and what Pound intended to convey when he wrote it. Nevertheless, they all have to agree that he did what he set out to do- transcend traditional form and make an eye-opening statement to his readers. Veterans essays

Veterans essays Veterans are those who have served in order to honor and protect their country. As these individuals boldly practiced their beliefs in freedom, they inadvertently rewrote history, and we as Americans honor these patriots who were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice. Veterans Day is the day that we set aside to honor those who served, but one day does not cover all the bloodshed. The day is not enough to show the appreciation which is due to the countless number of heroic men and women. The American people should do more to show respect to their veterans. After the many hard, sweaty days fighting the enemy with your friends dying all around you, the confrontation is finally over. A soldier gets to go home, but others will not be so lucky. This is what it means to be a veteran. Many people would just say it is putting on a uniform and carrying a gun against an enemy, but it is so much more than that. It is serving your country and standing up for what one believes is right. A veterans glory is not appreciated by the majority of the American people, because they do not understand all the heartache and pain that comes with the job. These heroes did not have to be asked to do what was right, or uphold their countries values. True, some were drafted to fight, but not one of these individuals would say it was not a life changing experience for them. The memory, whether happy or painful, will be permanently stuck with them for the rest of their lives. The men and women who helped shape the face of this country through their honor, legacy, and patriotism are those we call veterans. They are our dads, moms, uncles, brothers, and grandfathers. Yet, we constantly overlook their desire and passion for this country. The gratitude that they deserve is not shown towards them, as it should be. The way that the American people think that they sho ...

Architeuthis essays

Architeuthis essays The documentary of Architeuthis was about trying to learn more about these giant squid and also the journey to find one in its natural habitat. No person has ever documented the living existence of the creature. A few people have found washed up corpses of Architeuthis on shorelines. Never has one been found completely intact. The scientists tried to find out breeding habits, the lifespan of the squid, where they live, and so on. They are the archrival of the sperm whale. Many sperm whales have been found with giant gashes in their sides, more then likely from hunting Architeuthis. The program was very interesting, considering I was thinking about becoming a marine biologist. I learned what Architeuthis eats, also that it hunts sperm whale as well as the other way around. No one knows where these squid live and have never encountered a living specimen. So far the largest squid to wash up on shore has been measured sixty feet long, including tentacles. They also may produce millions of young, but the number is not set in stone, only hypothesized according to the size of the creature. Also the eyes of the squid are the largest found in the animal kingdom. The size of the eye is about the same as a human head. The reason for them having huge eyes is because they live in the ocean deep, where little sunlight makes it. Therefore large eyes would held drastically to help find food. The mouth of the squid contains a giant beak. The beak serves as teeth for the squid. The squid must eat constantly to keep up with its rapid growth. The arms of the squid ar e comparably as long as an anaconda. Located on the arms are hundreds of suckers along with teeth around the suckers. Finally the longest part of Architeuthis, are its tentacles. They serve as arms to pull in prey to the arms, which squeeze the prey so; the squid can tear up its prey with the beak. This article gave me a new respect for ocean life. Architeuthis has to...

The relationship between employee rewards and poor motivation in a Essay

The relationship between employee rewards and poor motivation in a Restaurant in the UK - Essay Example Interestingly, the same trend in turnover is also being observed in the United States (US) and in Germany (US Department of Labour, 2010; Endter, 2011). A number of factors were examined in various researches which tackled the issue of employee turnover. Blomme, Tromp, and Van Rheede (2008) suggested that performance rewards may be positive predictors of turnover; whereas, Robinson and Barron (2007) argued that low job satisfaction, not extrinsic rewards, are strongly associated with turnover. Theoretically, however, Jones, et al. (2003) maintained that recognition and appreciation, as well as a system of rewards, are necessary to boost employee motivation. In this regard, Walker and Miller (2010) consider incentive pay, bonuses and even non-monetary rewards to be effective modes of developing motivation, provided that the motivators used are congruent with employees’ needs and desires or that the motivators may be associated to their reasons for working. A look at the motivat or-hygiene or two-factor theory enunciated by Frederick Herzberg in the late 1950s posited that motivating factors are intrinsic elements of a job which lead to the satisfaction of an employee, while hygiene factors are the extrinsic elements of the work setting which cause dissatisfaction of an employee. ... Accordingly, Herzberg’s motivator-hygiene theory considered rewards system (i.e., salary and benefits as job dissatisfier; whereas Jones, et al. (2003) and Walker and Miller (2010) among others, believe otherwise. Moreover, Landy and Conte (2010) underscored the significance of examining the â€Å"level of success with various motivators to know how to increase or maintain work motivation for any individual† (p. 367). It is in the context of Landy and Conte’s assertion that this study is being proposed to investigate the relationship between employee rewards and motivation in a UK restaurant. Informal interviews with several employees in two branches of a restaurant in Bournemouth, UK revealed a prevailing attitude of discontent in their workplace among the staff. The interviewees confided that they are grossly dissatisfied with their pay, but they admitted they can not speak for the others. The series of casual conversations with a few restaurant staff provided the motivation for this proposed study. The research will verify the proponent’s position that there is a significant relationship between employee rewards and motivation among the employees in the two branches of the restaurant from the perspective that there is a positive link between satisfaction with the rewards system and the work motivation of the staff. If this relationship is confirmed, Herzberg’s theory that the rewards system is a hygiene factor and not a motivating factor will be disproved. Consequently, support can be gained for Walker and Miller’s (2010) confident assertion that â€Å"rewards are useful motivators† (p. 196). Staff satisfaction with the performance appraisal system, performance management system and the rewards
